What’s Guiding Your Career?
Do you have a North Star that’s guiding your career? Every successful company I consult with has a powerful vision that serves as their North Star. Why do you need one? Because when you clearly define your goals, you come that much closer to actualizing your dreams. When you finally uncover and get serious about your heart’s desire, the universe starts listening.
You may think you’ve told the universe by saying: “I want a promotion…I want a spouse…I want my own business.” I’m telling you that not’s enough. You must specifically define your dreams to set them in motion. “I want” doesn’t cut it.
Sometime ago, I coached a 40-something woman who wanted to make a move from being a Hollywood producer to an Internet content creator. We branded her the “digital storyteller”. She started introducing herself that way at networking events, and people started listening. With no online experience, she transferred her movie-making talent to a new medium and very soon scored her dream job! Today she runs a documentary film company that distributes Internet content. All by declaring her dream to the world, it came true.
Just like my client, it’s critical for you to map out your goals because when you commit your dreams to paper, you release them out into the world. Then when you speak of your dreams, you move them another inch closer to reality.
In order to create your North Star, type up or write down in your journal the following:
1. State three things you deeply desire
2. Your personal goals for 2011
3. Your professional goals for 2011
4. The impact you want to make on the world
5. How you would like to be recognized
Your goal might be to earn six figures or to get three choice projects handed to you, or be promoted to upper management, or to earn an industry award or receive mention in a trade journal. Or maybe your goal is to be respected by your boss, or to break out altogether by starting your own company or non-profit. Whatever your dream, putting it down on paper is the key to creating your North Star and unlocking your success.
When you write down your dreams you’ll find power in the pen. Your dreams may not have anything to do with your current job or chosen profession. Write them down anyway. What does living well look like, what does it contain? Be very specific and write paragraphs.
Dreams come true when we take responsibility for the things you want. Begin by talking about your goals and dreams with people who you know will be supportive. The more you put your dreams out there, the more powerfully they will be brought back to you in reality. Begin today by letting go of any superstition. Tell everyone your wish the next time you blow out your birthday candles. You’ll be one step closer to making it come true.
Watch for my post next week when I help you define your unique talents and skills so you can declare yourself as a specialist and make more money in 2011.
