Abolish the EPA? You’ve Gotta Be Kidding!

Last week, Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of The House, called for the abolishment of the Environmental Protection Agency. His call marks an extreme turn in the campaign being mounted by some of the most conservative voices in America against environmental protections. This call comes at a time when the impact of climate change is being felt with greater impact across all regions of the globe and most of the other industrialized nations are moving to enact greater environmental, food and water protections. Is this really the best the country known as the leader-of-the-free-world can do? You’ve Got To Be Kidding!

USA Today – Polls: Americans back EPA and clean energy

    Extract from the article -

The survey found that most Americans want the current EPA to do more, not less. Almost two thirds, or 63%, say “the EPA needs to do more to hold polluters accountable and protect the air and water,” while 29% say it already “does too much and places too many costly restrictions on businesses and individuals.”

In a further article today, by the Public Health Institute, it seems that the anti-EPA agenda, largely being driven by the big-bucks conservative activists, such as the Koch brothers, is misrepresenting the EPA’s actually successes.

The article states – Indeed, the a World Resources Institute analysis concludes, “there is extensive literature showing that the costs of environmental regulations are more than offset by a broad range of economic, public health and jobs-related benefits.” Over the 10-year period starting October 1, 1999, the Office of Management and Budget estimated that EPA regulations cost the nation $26-29 billion. Their benefits, however, saved between $82 and $533 billion. In other words, their benefits outpaced their costs by at least a factor of three, and possibly by a factor of 20.

Take action – President Obama is negotiating a deal with Republicans to give up key pollution safeguards and EPA authorities in order to gain their cooperation to pass the federal budget.
